GENETICS Terms Ribosome

- Info:

- Ribosome is composed of:

- small subunit

- large subunit

- rRNA - Ribosomal RNA sandwiched between them.

- Large unit has three binding sites:

- A cceptor or aminoacyl-tRNA site

- P peptidyl-tRNA site

- E exit site.

- A and P sites hold two adjacent codons of the mRNA.

- At first, the P site holds the first codon in the mRNA (AUG) and A site holds the next codon (CUA in our example).

- Several ribosomes can attach to a molecule of mRNA one after another and begin making proteins simultaniously.

- Each cell has thousands of ribosomes.
