BIBLE Terms Akedah

- Info:

- Akedah is Hebrew word which means binding.

- Akedah or "The Binding of Isaac" are names given to a story from the Hebrew Bible.

- In this story God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on Mount Moriah.

- Isaac carries the wood to the altar.

- Abraham "bound Isaac his son" before placing him on the altar, thus the popular name for the incident.

- The angel of God stops Abraham at the last minute, saying that "now I know you fear God.".

- At this point Abraham sees a ram caught in some nearby bushes and sacrifices the ram in Isaac's stead.

- Actions and words of angels are generally understood to derive directly from God's will.

- God was testing Abraham to see if he would actually kill his own son, as a test of his loyalty.
