- Roman Catholics were one of two major factions of the early Christianity, beside Gnostics.

- They were centered in Rome.

- They were influenced by the teachings of the Apostle Paul.

- They became prominent in the fourth century C.E. when the Roman Empire officially became Christian.

- Romans recognized the importance of a sacred text in controlling Christians.

- So they brought together a collection of writings called New Testament and proclaimed them as official sacred text.

- Roman faction rejected as heresy all other writings about Jesus' life and teachings.

- This included many books written by North African Gnostic Christians.
